You Do Not Need A Conspiracy Theory

A28 spell it out

WWW.A28.ORG launched the summer of impeachment today. This could be the day that goes down in history as the day the People of the United States started taking back their country. Today is the day you can stand up and show the world the United States is the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

It is not a conspiracy theory that Bush and Cheney lied to Congress and the People of the United States.

It is a Fact.

It is not a conspiracy theory that Bush and Cheney promote spying on the People of the United States in open Violation of the Law.

It is a Fact.

It is not a conspiracy theory that Bush and Cheney sanction the use of Torture.

It is a Fact.

Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich filed House Resolution 333 Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney. The first step has been made. Now many more steps must be taken. Congress must be activated around this issue.

Only you can do that.

Impeach Cheney First

Perhaps some of you think this position is too extreme. Perhaps you think this is a rush to judgment. Perhaps you think we have more time to think about it. Time we could spend going shopping. Time we could spend watching TV.

We Do Not have more Time.

If you disagree with the above statement you owe it to yourself to read, “Fascist America In 10 Easy Steps,” by Naomi Wolf.

In her book, “The Impeachment of George W. Bush: A Practical Guide for Concerned Citizens,” former Representative Elizabeth Holtzman argues that DC’s political elite, including most in the Democratic party, opposed impeaching Richard Nixon until they felt a groundswell of public sentiment behind the move.

That means you have to be part of the groundswell of public sentiment calling for impeachment. Today would be a great day to start.

WWW.A28.ORG makes it Easy

At their website you can both find actions to join and ask others to join your action. You can be part of the historic reclamation of the United States. You can help prove the system works. And this can all be accomplished peacefully. No violence required.

No hate. No anger. No angst. No stress. No worry. This can be fun. Wear a T-shirt. Send an email. Comment on a blog. Literally, there may be nothing more important for you to invest your time in.

Depleted Uranium for Peace

April 24th, 2007 Jay Posted in Blogroll, Peace 1 Comment »

Once upon a time, in my youth, I intended to enlist as a combatant in the international conflict of the day. I was young, dumb and full of testosterone. Fortunately I got a clue. My conversion resulted from two sources of input.

First, I would have had to been living under a rock not to notice the people of the United States rising up in mass protest. I did not personally know any protesters but they seemed to be everywhere. Handbills, flyers, speeches, and both the mainstream and alternative media informed me. But this by itself did not dissuade me. This only initiated a personal process of questioning my naive opinion.

Second, I met a protester who was a veteran. Initially I challenged his position but rather than debate me in my obvious ignorance and bravado he gave me a book to read. He promised to discuss the issue with me if I read the book first. It was a small book, so I agreed. The book was

“Johnny Got His Gun” by Dalton Trumbo.

I had tears rolling down my face before I finished the book. When I went to return it I was ready to listen to someone who had lived through combat. The experience not only saved my life, it changed my life. I never saw him again and I don’t know if I even learned his name. I certainly don’t know it now, nearly 40 years later. But I still remember the emotional impact of our meeting and will be forever grateful.

So what does this have to do with Depleted Uranium (DU)? DU is toxic heavy metal with radioactive properties used by the military as anti-armor weapons and to reinforce tank armor. The military claims DU is not harmful to health and environment but independent experts disagree. Here is what they say.

DU dust traveled 2,400 miles in nine days from Iraq to England after the 2003 “Shock and Awe” attack on Iraq. The invisible DU dust cloud quadrupled Europe’s atmospheric radiation. Over 2,000 tons of United States DU munitions exploded in Iraq since 2003. Every sand storm in Iraq reintroduces DU dust particles into the air.

Journalists have reported that since 2003 parts of Baghdad have radiation levels 1,900 times higher than normal. Leukemia, other cancers and birth defects are on the rise in Iraq. One hospital averaged five deaths a day in infants and children.

Gulf War Syndrome has wide and varied health complaints. Since 2002 over 600,000 veterans have left active duty due to illness. In WWII the veteran disability rate was 5%. The rate was 10% after Vietnam. Gulf War Veteran’s disability rate is 55%.

DU remains radioactive for over 4 billion years. Exposure to DU dust may cause a wide variety of illness (symptoms may take years to appear) including

  • acute skin rashes
  • lung problems
  • severe headaches
  • depression
  • muscle and joint pain
  • general fatigue
  • major birth defects
  • liver infection
  • kidney failure
  • cardiovascular disease
  • brain tumors
  • almost every type of cancer

The military denies DU causes serious illness.

If you are considering enlistment you owe it to

yourself and your loved ones

to do your due diligence as to the facts of combat. Ask a combat veteran to level with you. If you have experienced combat would it be too much to ask that you share your experience with just one young, dumb and full of testosterone human being?

Whatever Happened To Peace On Earth?

April 24th, 2007 Liz Posted in Blogroll, Peace, Willie Nelson No Comments »

“Achieving peace through strength doesn’t necessarily mean that you need bigger tanks or missiles, for peace can also be achieved through personal strength.”
Willie Nelson

“Imagine living in harmony with the world and those who inhabit it.”
Willie Nelson

We have an opportunity to vote for peace. Dennis Kucinich has a vision beyond any politician running this 2008 Presidential campaign. He is a staunch out spoken pro peace candidate who is not willing to compromise a vision of a world living in harmony and peace, a world where war is not on the table and for this unpopular position the media and his own party marginalizes him. At an anti-war rally on October 2, 2002, Obama said, “I don’t oppose war in all circumstances. When I look out on this crowd today, I know there is no shortage of patriots or patriotism. What I do oppose is a dumb war.” Why do we have to consider war?

How can you make a war on terror if war itself is terrorism?
Howard Zinn

Dennis Kucinich offers an opportunity for dialogue without the idea that war is a possibility. For this I admire him because taking this unpopular stance demonstrates Dennis is working from a position of inner strength and compassion. He proposes open discussions fostering an atmosphere where ideas from opposing points of view are welcome without the threat of war hanging over everyone’s head.

“The best preparedness is the one that disarms the hostility of other nations and makes friends of them.” Helen Keller

Dennis wants to relate directly to the American public because that is where all the power lies. Let’s create a world where inner values of compassion, love, care and affection dominate. Dealing with our fear allows peace to prosper and we all grow personally and collectively stronger. War does not work as an avenue to create peace. Decide what kind of America you want to have for yourselves and your children and share your voice.

“I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that the people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it.” Dwight D. Eisenhower

What Do Willie Nelson, Ben and Jerry Have In Common?

April 22nd, 2007 Liz Posted in Blogroll, Peace No Comments »

I bet you said, Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler ice cream from Ben and Jerry. And you’d be right but I know you can think beyond your stomach to your heart and soul. I’m not talking about ice cream really but go and get some if it helps you think. I’m really asking you to think about three men who share common values. So let’s try again.

What do Willie Nelson, Ben and Jerry have in common? Now the wheels are turning. It only takes two brain cells to start bumping together to get the others to wake up. The carbs are kicking in and you’re on a roll. How about establishing peace on our planet? How about bringing the troops back from Iraq? How about social justice? Did I hear you say give all children on this planet a positive start in life? And true sustainability for our environment? What about a cooperative and creative relationship with the world community?

Thank you for your input. You all get an A for exercising that gray matter between your ears. And you’re right. These are values that Willie Nelson, Ben and Jerry share. But my guess is you share these same values and you want to make a difference. I know you are very busy just trying to survive and provide for your family in this world. What if I told you there is a free and easy way to be involved and it will only take 2 minutes a month? Can you find 2 minutes a month to exercise your birthright as an American citizen and truly make a difference?

Willie Nelson, Ben and Jerry are asking for your help. Our leaders need support. We need to help them see right to act right. We need to hear from you and Ben is making it real easy and free. His organization True Majority Action monitors what’s going on in Washington based upon the principles of peace, justice, and sustainability. When your voice counts, they will send you a short e-mail alert that explains the situation. You can choose to send a free fax to your Congresspeople, by just clicking “Reply” and then “Send.” Their technology will generate a message from you to your Congresspeople. That’s it.

“You know inside whether it’s right. But you still have to choose to do it.”

“People and nations moving ahead when they’re wrong is the root of many of the world’s problems.” Willie Nelson

“If we are too busy, if we are carried away every day by our projects, our uncertainty, our craving, how can we have the time to stop and look deeply into the situation-our own situation, the situation of our beloved one, the situation of our family and of our community, and the situation of our nation and of the other nations?”

The Largest Peace Lobby in Washington, DC

April 22nd, 2007 Jay Posted in Blogroll, Peace 1 Comment »

Members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) founded the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) in 1943. According to their web site, FCNL has played a pivotal role in the creation of the Peace Corps, was instrumental in lobbying for the creation of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, played an important role in lobbying for the Civil Rights Act, and led efforts in Washington to oppose both the first (1991) and second (2003) Iraq wars.

They have a current campaign illustrating how much of the United States tax dollar goes toward war. It certainly puts a new light on things when you realize that 41% of United States taxes, that is $.41 out of every dollar, is spent on war. This being tax month here in the United States, I hope every U. S. taxpayer thinks about this.

The thing that makes this even more shocking is that only 1-penny out of every tax dollar goes to humanitarian aid, diplomatic missions and international cooperation. I hope I’m not the only person who sees something out of balance with these numbers. And in providing alternatives to lives of crime, only 5 pennies out of every dollar goes to education, job training, employment and social services. The FCNL has provided a handy chart and suggestions on who to show it to.

The scope of their activities is very impressive. The list of the issues they address is lengthy. But now I’m wondering about cooperation between them and other peace organizations. Considering their stated goals it is surprising that there is no mention of support for the creation of a Department of Peace on their web site. I would think that this would be something the largest peace lobby in Washington, DC would be interested in.

The Peace Alliance needs team leaders in many Congressional Districts. So I took it upon myself to use the FCNL contact page to ask them to put the word out asking for people to step up and become team leaders for the Peace Alliance in the districts that need them. I hope this is not too much to ask. The creation of a Peace voting bloc goes hand-in-hand with a Peace lobby.

It seems to me that if the Friends Committee on National Legislation used their media resources to connect across organizational lines to another peace organization it could only help their efforts. What could be more powerful for a peace lobby than to be able to point to a large and growing peace voting bloc? The movement to create the cabinet level position of the Department of Peace would also create powerful allies for the FCNL lobbying efforts. The synergy would be awesome.

Tell me what you think. You can also tell the FCNL what you think as well.
