Reduce Violence and War by Increasing Omega 3 Fatty Acids In Your Diet

Captain Joseph R. Hibbeln, Acting Chief of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Education and the National Institutes of Health, documented international relationships between decreased Omega 3 consumption and increased rates of depressive disorders.

He published a 2001 study which linked dietary Omega 3 with the extreme form of violence, homicide. The study included 38 countries. The findings showed that countries with high Omega 3 consumption demonstrated less homicides. And that high levels of Omega 6 consumption combined with low levels of Omega 3 (DHA and EPA) correlated with hostile behavior.

The Standard American Diet (SAD) is heavily weighted toward
1. saturated fat from animal and vegetable sources
2. trans fatty acids (hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated) and
3. refined, heated, denatured Polyunsaturated Omega 6 fatty acids
such as
a. corn
b. safflower
c. sunflower
d. soybean and
e. cottonseed oils
used in deep fat frying, high heat cooking, salad dressings, sauces and processed foods.

Over the last century most western countries have undergone a dramatic shift in the composition of their diets in which the omega-3 fatty acids that are essential to the brain have been flooded out by competing omega-6 fatty acids, mainly from industrial oils such as soya, corn, and sunflower.

In the US, for example, soya oil accounted for only 0.02% of all calories available in 1909, but by 2000 it accounted for 20%. Americans have gone from eating a fraction of an ounce of soya oil a year to downing 25lbs (11.3kg) per person per year in that period. In the UK, omega-6 fats from oils such as soya, corn, and sunflower accounted for 1% of energy supply in the early 1960s, but by 2000 they were nearly 5%.

These omega-6 fatty acids come mainly from industrial frying for takeaways, ready meals and snack foods such as crisps, chips, biscuits, ice-creams and from margarine. Alcohol, meanwhile, depletes omega-3s from the brain.

To test the hypothesis, Hibbeln and his colleagues have mapped the growth in consumption of omega-6 fatty acids from seed oils in 38 countries since the 1960s against the rise in murder rates over the same period. In all cases there is an unnerving match.

As omega-6 goes up, so do homicides in a linear progression. Industrial societies where omega-3 consumption has remained high and omega-6 low because people eat fish, such as Japan, have low rates of murder and depression.
Of course, all these graphs prove is that there is a striking correlation between violence and omega 6-fatty acids in the diet.

For Hibbeln, the changes in our diet in the past century are “a very large uncontrolled experiment that may have contributed to the societal burden of aggression, depression and cardiovascular death.”

…the evidence from the UK prison study and from Hibbeln’s research in the US on the link between nutritional deficiency and crime is ” strong”, although the mechanisms involved are still not fully understood.

Hibbeln, Stein and others have been investigating what the mechanisms of a causal relationship between diet and aggression might be. This is where the biochemistry and biophysics comes in.
Essential fatty acids are called essential because humans cannot make them but must obtain them from the diet.

The brain is a fatty organ – it’s 60% fat by dry weight, and the essential fatty acids are what make part of its structure, making up 20% of the nerve cells’ membranes. The synapses, or junctions where nerve cells connect with other nerve cells, contain even higher concentrations of essential fatty acids – being made of about 60% of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA.

Communication between the nerve cells depends on neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, docking with receptors in the nerve cell membrane.

Omega-3 DHA is very long and highly flexible. When it is incorporated into the nerve cell membrane it helps make the membrane itself elastic and fluid so that signals pass through it efficiently. But if the wrong fatty acids are incorporated into the membrane, the neurotransmitters can’t dock properly.

We know from many other studies what happens when the neurotransmitter systems don’t work efficiently. Low serotonin levels are known to predict an increased risk of suicide, depression and violent and impulsive behaviour. And dopamine is what controls the reward processes in the brain.

Laboratory tests at NIH have shown that the composition of tissue and in particular of the nerve cell membrane of people in the US is different from that of the Japanese, who eat a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids from fish. Americans have cell membranes higher in the less flexible omega-6 fatty acids, which appear to have displaced the elastic omega-3 fatty acids found in Japanese nerve cells.

Hibbeln’s theory is that because the omega-6 fatty acids compete with the omega-3 fatty acids for the same metabolic pathways, when omega-6 dominates in the diet, we can’t convert the omega-3s to DHA and EPA, the longer chain versions we need for the brain. What seems to happen then is that the brain picks up a more rigid omega-6 fatty acid DPA instead of DHA to build the cell membranes – and they don’t function so well.

Other experts blame the trans fats produced by partial hydrogenation of industrial oils for processed foods. Trans fats have been shown to interfere with the synthesis of essentials fats in fetuses and infants. Minerals such as zinc and the B vitamins are needed to metabolize essential fats, so deficiencies in these may be playing an important part too.

There is also evidence that deficiencies in DHA/EPA at times when the brain is developing rapidly – in the womb, in the first 5 years of life and at puberty – can affect its architecture permanently. Animal studies have shown that those deprived of omega-3 fatty acids over two generations have offspring who cannot release dopamine and serotonin so effectively.

“The extension of all this is that if children are left with low dopamine as a result of early deficits in their own or their mother’s diets, they cannot experience reward in the same way and they cannot learn from reward and punishment. If their serotonin levels are low, they cannot inhibit their impulses or regulate their emotional responses,” Hibbeln points out.

Prison Trial
Aylesbury was at the time a prison for young male offenders, aged 17 to 21, convicted of the most serious crimes. Trevor Hussey was then deputy governor and remembers it being a tough environment. “It was a turbulent young population. They had problems with their anger…”

Although the governor was keen on looking at the relationship between diet and crime, Hussey remembers being skeptical himself at the beginning of the study.

But quite quickly staff noticed a significant drop in the number of reported incidents of bad behaviour.
But when the trial finished it became clear that the drop in incidents of bad behaviour applied only to those on the supplements and not to those on the placebo.

The results, published in 2002, showed that those receiving the extra nutrients committed 37% fewer serious offences involving violence, and 26% fewer offences overall. Those on the placebos showed no change in their behaviour. Once the trial had finished the number of offences went up by the same amount. The office the researchers had used to administer nutrients was restored to a restraint room after they had left.

“The supplements improved the functioning of those prisoners. It was clearly something significant that can’t be explained away…”

Gesch believes we should be rethinking the whole notion of culpability. The overall rate of violent crime in the UK has risen since the 1950s, with huge rises since the 1970s. “Such large changes are hard to explain in terms of genetics or simply changes of reporting or recording crime. One plausible candidate to explain some of the rapid rise in crime could be changes in the brain’s environment. What would the future have held for those 231 young men if they had grown up with better nourishment?” Gesch says.

Research with British and US offenders suggests nutritional deficiencies
may play a key role in aggressive behavior

In 1995, Dr. Norman Salem at the National Institute of Mental Health said low levels of Omega 3 fatty acids, especially one part called DHA, abundant in wild cold water fatty fish such as sardines, halibut, salmon, herring and albacore tuna are linked to depression, aggressive behavior, brain damage from alcohol, attention deficit disorder, and possibly Alzheimer’s disease. Deficiency in  DHA and other Omega-3 fatty acids in brain cell membranes, says Dr. Salem, may compromise optimal brain functioning in a multitude of ways.

The Commission’s 24-page report heralded a quantum leap forward for activist groups such as

• Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP),
• Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), the
• National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), the
• Willie Nelson Peace Research Institute (WNPRI), and
• a seemingly endless list of others who have over decades been saying exactly the same things that the report concludes.

“The global war on drugs has failed [and] is now causing more harm than drug abuse itself,” the Commission boldly declares. “This [blackmarket] industry has empowered organized criminals, corrupted governments at all levels, eroded internal security, stimulated violence, and distorted both economic markets and moral values [resulting in] decades of failed and futile drug war policies. Act urgently: the war on drugs has failed, and policies need to change now.”

In quick response to the Commission’s call for political leaders to closely examine the scientific evidence which “overwhelmingly demonstrates that repressive strategies will not solve the drug problem, and that the war on drugs has not, and cannot, be won,” Reps. Barney Frank (D-MA) and Ron Paul (R-TX) almost immediately proposed legislation to end the federal prohibition of cannabis.

H.B. 2306, the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2011, would remove marijuana from the federal schedule of controlled substances, and reaffirm the rights of the voters of each state to make decisions about how or if the cannabis-hemp plant, its cultivation and the production of commercial goods related to it are to be regulated, if at all, without federal interference.

in accord of legislative due process, the proposed legislation has been submitted to the House Judiciary Committee and must be approved (ie: ‘passed out of committee’) before it can be debated by the full House of Representatives. And there are many more steps beyond that which the proposed legislation will have to pass through, including ultimately being signed by the President, before it becomes the law of the land.

However, this is the first time in the long and tumultuous history of marijuana debate that a bill mandating the end of federal prohibition has been introduced.

Thus we celebrate.

Still, the Commission’s appeal for “open and honest dialogue regarding the failure of global drug policies” has a long way to go to make law and is now poised at the first hurdle to passage. Congressman Lamar Smith, representing the 21st Congressional District of Texas (Austin, Kerrville, San Antonio) serves as the head of the House Judiciary Committee and has reportedly stated strong opposition to H.B. 2306.

To forward the momentum of public awareness on this critical issue, the Willie Nelson Peace Research Institute, Liz O’Garvey and Jay Greathouse, has joined in a ‘Paul Revere Rally’, the objective of which, according to Arkansas Teapot Party spokesperson Richard Morton is to “get people informed about what is going on so we can work together to straighten things out.”

Once aware of the facts, Morton encourages people to get involved with writing, calling, emailing and faxing the members of the House Judiciary Committee with support for H.B. 2306.

“This is not really about pot,” Morton asserts.  “It is about liberty and justice. It is about our ‘unalienable’ rights as citizens. It is about us telling our own government to mind its own business and calling a halt to some of the nonsense that has been going on, like putting people in jail for growing plants.”

Statistically, the number of people incarcerated for nonviolent drug offenses has increased more than twelve-fold since 1980. Some 7.2 million people are now either in prison or on probation or parole — more than 3 percent of all American adults.

“We’ve got to get back to common sense basics,” Morton summarized. “We’ve got to speak out.”

The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act

Enacted in 1971 to halt the disappearance of these iconic animals from public lands in the American West

Since then, however, over 20 million acres of land set aside by Congress for wild horses have been removed from their range, even as the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)—the very agency charged with their protection—claims there is not enough land to support existing herds.

The BLM is unnecessarily removing horses based on spurious claims of damage to range and other adverse impacts.

The BLM’s mismanagement of America’s wild horses is largely designed to benefit a livestock industry that has for decades, exploited western public lands while profiting from massive subsidies funded by taxpayer dollars.

Willie & The Nelson Family and AWI are calling on the BLM and the Obama administration to immediately halt all wild horse round-ups, restore the land provided by law to wild horses and to stop warehousing horses on private lands at even greater expense to the taxpayer.

“There is no greater voice than Willie Nelson when it comes to speaking for the underdog.  For decades, Willie has fought to protect family farmers in America, while also advocating for the humane treatment of horses and other animals,” said Chris Heyde, deputy director of government and legal affairs for AWI. “We are so grateful for the support of Willie and the entire Nelson family and we hope this song will raise awareness of the deteriorating situation facing wild horses and help turn things around before they disappear from their lands forever.”

You might be a lot like me, spending some time pursuing peace. By now you may have noticed that;

The song “Jimmy’s Road,” produced in 1968 and issued as a B-side in 1969, found new life when released in 1991 on “Who’ll Buy My Memories? (The I.R.S. Tapes)” and on the 1993 “Willie Nelson: A Classic and Unreleased Collection.”

This video version was first released in 2003 on the rare and honestly collectible Willie Nelson Peace DVD. On this DVD it is followed by “Whatever Happened to Peace on Earth?” by Willie Nelson and “The War Prayer” by Mark Twain, read by Willie Nelson And Family.

This is Jimmy’s road where Jimmy liked to play. This is Jimmy’s grass where Jimmy liked to lay around.

This is Jimmy’s tree where Jimmy liked to climb, But Jimmy went to war and something changed his mind around.

The United States of America set new records in violence during the terrible year of 1968

• Troop levels in Vietnam were still close to its historic peak of 543,400.
• Operation Rolling Thunder had already dropped 864,000 tons of bombs on Vietnam.
• The January Tet offensive brought the war to the American Embassy in Saigon.
• The My Lai Massacre took place on March 16. Eighteen months later we could no longer deny the horrible things United States soldiers do.
• On April 4, Martin Luther King was assassinated on a hotel balcony in Memphis, Tennessee. Race riots, looting, shooting, and arson broke out in many cities.
• On June 5, Robert Kennedy was assassinated in a Los Angeles hotel.

On June 20, Willie Nelson wrote one of the greatest poems in the long history of sorrowful war poetics. His poem-song is called “Jimmy’s Road.” Willie calls it a peace poem. It lasts 2 minutes and 39 seconds.

What did Willie Nelson think he was doing?

Only two of the songs he released as a performer had made Billboard’s Country Top 20 by 1968. His biggest success by then, “Bring Me Sunshine,” reached number 13.

In July 1968, Chet Atkins and Elvis Presley’s producer Felton Jarvis, produced “Jimmy’s Road” in Nashville . It was released on a 45 in May 1969, as the B-side to Willie Nelson’s version of John Hartford’s “Natural to Be Gone.”

Perhaps the delay in release reflects concern about how the anti-war message and sobering solo guitar melody of “Jimmy’s Road” might play with the audience Willie Nelson was supposedly trying so hard to win over.

Country music had heard nothing like “Jimmy’s Road.”

More representative of country music’s mood at the time was Kris Kristofferson’s “Viet Nam Blues,” which played well on the country charts for singer Dave Dudley in 1966.

Seven months after “Jimmy’s Road” was released, Merle Haggard wrote his classic, red-white-and-blue country standard, “Okie from Muskogee.” Willie Nelson entered uncharted waters and his single did not chart.

Why did Willie Nelson take such a risk?

Willie says it struck him as “some sort of strange thing” that a gentle soul of artistic temperament could grow up climbing trees and playing in fields, and suddenly be learning how to kill people.

Many American families are aware of what used to be called “shell shock” or “combat fatigue,” and is now known as PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Willie’s simple phrase, “something changed his mind around,” captures this awful change in the people we love.

In the fourth stanza, Jimmy’s buried body reacts when other soldiers die in combat.

Willie says, “It’s like his death is in vain. Whatever he thought would happen, didn’t.”

One cannot but wonder how many of our children who have died on foreign soil would feel the same way.

“Jimmy’s Road” has a second life now. Willie made a video version that can be found on our YouTube channel.

The emotionally powerful “Jimmy’s Road” video made it to the honestly collectible Willie Nelson Peace DVD followed by the anti-Iraq War song he wrote on Christmas 2003, “Whatever Happened to Peace on Earth?” In it, Willie Nelson bluntly questions the killing, the false premises for going to war, the betrayal of Christian morality, and the passive gullibility of average Americans.

We believe everything that they tell us.

They’re gonna’ kill us. So we gotta’ kill them first.

But I remember a commandment, Thou shall not kill.

How much is that soldier’s life worth?

And whatever happened to peace on Earth?

Willie Nelson also sings of how information about war has been controlled.

Lost Highway Records digitally released the song on November 21, 2006, with all proceeds going to the benefit of the National Veterans Foundation.

The DVD ends with a reading of “The War Prayer.” Mark Twain wrote this tale in 1904.

• In “The War Prayer,” Twain focuses on what we do in war to our enemies.
• In “Jimmy’s Road,” Willie focuses on what we do to our own children.

Twain makes the point that humanism and Christianity’s preaching of love are incompatible with the conduct of war.

Twain wrote to his friend Daniel Carter Beard, to whom he had read the story, “I don’t think the prayer will be published in my time. None but the dead are permitted to tell the truth”.

Twain feared the effect it might have on sales of his writing, which he needed to support his family. He decided that it should be published posthumously, as it was in 1923.

Willie’s daughter Amy co-wrote “A Peaceful Solution” with him on April 29, 2007. Willie and Amy’s song declares that the real war we all need to be fighting is the war to reclaim our own country.

Willie is alive and speaking out doing his best to prove Mark Twain wrong. So are we.

In the womb, every fetus learns to thrash about in response to the extreme discomfort of toxic blood and intense pain of hypoxia. The Special Report goes on from here by explaining how this early lesson in the womb lays the foundation for later adult repetitive compulsive violence.

Triggers for adult repetitive compulsive violence, as I mention in the Special Report, develops in children experiencing what passes for normal child rearing. Triggers develop around a need to punish a “bad child” substitute, to redeem oneself as a “good child” in the eyes of “killer mom” and thus be saved from death or abandonment.

Now, I wish to emphasize the part where the fetus learns to thrash about as it experiences the extreme discomfort of toxic blood and hypoxia. My close collaborator, Liz O’Garvey (The Real Infrared), discovered many references to diet influencing behavior during her research and often shared them with me.

The Israeli Paradox in particular caught my attention.

The Israeli Paradox is the fact that Jewish Israelis have very high rates of

• heart disease,
• diabetes and
• cancer

in spite of a diet

• low in total fat,
• high in polyunsaturated fats (the supposedly good fats), and
• low in saturated fats.

The best guess is that the Israeli Paradox is due to a high intake of soybean oil. Non-Jewish Israeli citizens have rates of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer roughly half the Jewish rate. These non-Jewish Israelis consume olive oil rather than soybean oil.

“Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats [such as omega-6] is a safe, proven, and delicious way to cut the rates of heart disease,” wrote Walter Willett, the Harvard epidemiologist, in Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy (2001, p. 71).

The Israeli Paradox shows that this way of reducing heart disease is anything but safe and proven.

Many health researchers today consider blood toxins as leading causes of heart disease, diabetes and cancer with soybean oil becoming an ever more suspected source of blood toxins. I do not want to become sidetracked by health issues here, you will need to ask Liz about those.

What I need to point out here is this evidence of the Jewish population of Israel regularly possessing toxic blood conditions to the extent of developing a recognizably higher health risk across the entire population segment.

I know of one other population segment of national proportions that regularly possesses toxic blood conditions to a similar extent of developing a recognizably higher health risk across an entire population.

The other population eats the Standard American Diet (SAD) and it lives predominately in North America with smaller groups in democratic and developing countries worldwide.

I find it remarkable beyond coincidence that the state of Israel and the United States government both also appear as the most violent actors on the world stage.

Exposing the link between adult repetitive compulsive violence triggered on a national level and national diet provides additional pathways to decreasing world violence. I strongly feel this avenue offers nearly the same potential as universal support and protection of mothers and children, with the added benefit of near immediate results.

Additionally, the ability of personal development to mitigate the triggers inculcated during early childhood also deserves more attention.

I sense the urge to write at least two more reports while also increasing the reach of the original Special Report Peace On Earth In Our Lifetime and the implementation of its goals.

The entire story behind the Willie Nelson Peace DVD is not clear to me and I have had no indication that it will ever be completely revealed. Anyway, you can see and hear for yourself on the web quality versions that Willie Nelson and Family created the Peace DVD and that Reverend James D. Kimmel was part of it.

Reverend Kimmel told me he ended up with a total of 3,000 Peace DVDs sent to him by Willie Nelson himself and to the best of his (and my) knowledge these were the only physical Peace DVDs actually produced.

I am not a writer just a girl with an idea.

In the past I have had a limited spiritual belief system. Still, a belief in something and like many people wanting to know more but too busy living off life to pursue it further. However I have been given the gift of time to learn and understand things clearer.

The journey has been positive, mostly, but the more I read and see disturbing programs I am so overwhelmed with the weight of the world. So much negativity it just wants to swallow you up. I think if there is more negative than positive what can we do to shift the balance to more positive than negative. With mass consciousness, like minds, what you put out there, the more of us tuned in to the same vibration maybe that could help?

Years ago I lived near Terry Fox. He was a young man who ran across Canada to raise money for cancer.

Alas he did not make it.

After he died a radio station out of Vancouver had a campaign for everyone to beep their horns for him on a particular day and time. I had forgot about this and on the day heard this awful “noise” coming from outside. As I went to see what it was I remembered and the noise turned into a glorious “sound”.

People came out of their homes to hear and we banged whatever we could to add to it.

I was wondering that if the world would sing a song the same song of love at the same time could that help to tip the scale? What would it sound like?

Its something that we can all do together without any inconvenience and little effort.

A song like “one love” or “all you need is love” perhaps is known all over the world. I know it can be done with mass advertising and like minded musicians.

There are a lot of like minded musicians all over the world that may want to have free concerts to gather people together. If you can’t get to one, from home to hospital, job to jail, park to palace, just open your mouth and sing. Music brings people together as it soothes the savage beast, lifts spirits, opens hearts and we can all relate to it in some way. I’ve thought a lot about this and how it can be done.

Maybe its arrogant or foolish to think we can live in a world the way a lot of us think it can be but I am going to remain hopeful. With an intention of love anything is possible.

Get some knowledge of the things holding us back, like money, ego, religion, politics, DNA, dogma and go with free will.

Heaven on earth, is that too much to ask? Even if it is just for as long as a song.
