Adopt a Horse from Willie Nelson

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

My first horseback-riding lesson was when I was five years old and I picked the horse to ride for this dream of a lifetime. Not bad to be five years old and have your lifetime dream fulfilled. It was a black and white paint horse that I fell in love with at first sight. Prior to this official lesson I had taken many a pony ride at carnivals or street parties. I dreamt of horses all the time. I badgered my parents continually to get me a horse. I’d watch any movie if it had horses in it. Another dream I’ve held on to has been to have a beautiful paint horse and live in the country.

Charleston chew, a candy bar from my youth had a contest to win a horse and I ate plenty of those bars continually sending in my contest form. Every year a horse was on my list to Santa as well. I never stopped asking my parents for a horse. But growing up in a city and then the suburbs never afforded my dream to be fulfilled.

Taking jobs as a caretaker gave me opportunities to take care of and ride horses. That’s where I met a beautiful Appaloosa. She was black with black spots you could only see in the sun. She had the most perfect back for riding bareback, soft and cushy without any protruding backbone and was a sweetheart. Riding this beautiful gentle powerful horse through an ancient redwood forest has been a top experience in my life.

Another time I rode a horse on a long expanse of beach in Northern California without any other people in sight. And on Maui I’ve ridden horses in Hana on land only horses can go, down into the crater at Haleakala and through gorgeous terrain on the west and northwest sides of this incredible island. So why am I telling you this?

Plato wrote in Phaedrus, “The soul which has seen most of the truth shall come to birth as a philosopher, or beauty lover, or a fervent musician.” I have always loved beauty and have gone to great lengths and hardships to live in beautiful places to feast my eyes upon nature’s beautiful flora and fauna.

Horses have always been to me one of the most beautiful creatures on this planet. Their power, strength and grace in action communicate freedom to my spirit. To see a horse run free releases joy from my soul. The horse’s willingness to cooperate if raised from birth with a gentle hand allows a bond to grow which heals the soul. Horses bring peace to me and I believe to all who love them.

To witness the birth of a foal and day by day through gentle interaction develop trust and companionship enhances our being. This connection creates harmony and balance allowing us a greater capacity to feel. Horses bring so much value to our lives on all levels.  They need our protection to survive.

Are you like me who has always wanted a horse or do you have a child that won’t stop asking you to get a horse? Do you have a place suitable for horses?

Willie Nelson has some beautiful paint horses and other gorgeous horses available for adoption. If you would like to adopt a horse from Willie Nelson’s foster ranch in Luck, Texas, go here.

  1. Beautiful story. I, too, rode horses in my youth. It is a spiritual experience. If the time comes when I might be so lucky as to have a horse in my life again, I will definitely look to Willie for the adoption. Thank you.
