Schlueter, Maxwell, SpecterThe UT Willie Nelson Center Students for Peace and Conflict Resolution and the UT Project on Conflict Resolution participated in the 29th Anniversary Old Pecan Street Spring Festival in Austin May 5 - 6 2007.

getting readyThey wore their new Willie Nelson Center t-shirts and took their brochures and a game ‘Toss Your Change to Make a Change’ to the downtown streets at the Old Pecan Street Festival in Austin. They were there to spread the word and raise a little money.

Madeline M. Maxwell, Professor of Communication Studies writes, “The new t-shirts brought out lots of questions about Willie Nelson’s involvement. Of course, everyone in Austin knows about the music. Austin loves Willie Nelson and is proud of his connection to the city. So people were curious about what we are doing at UT and what Willie has to do with it.”

game“It was a wonderful opportunity to talk about our programs and his involvement in peace. We were able to make the connection between tolerance, personified by Willie Nelson, and issues of the day for the people who came by. The organizers, Rob Lippincott and Luis Zapata, made it possible for us to invite all of our supporters this past academic year to a VIP party as a small thank-you. We sat out on the roof patio and enjoyed refreshments and listening to the music down below and talking about next year’s plans.” Madeline reported.

partyThe festival is the largest whole family event in Central Texas featuring 200 plus arts and crafts exhibitors, 40 plus vendors, dozens of bands, dance lessons, multicultural performers and more than 300,000 beautiful people.

Members of the Willie Nelson Center Students for Peaceful Conflict Resolution will serve as counselors for UT Global Ethics and Conflict Resolution Summer Symposium for High School Students at the University of Texas, Austin, June 17 - 30, 2007.
