Ten Fingers, 10 Toes Performed On Maui

Ten Fingers, 10 Toes,” a play about the cost of war for a Hawaii family, will be performed free for the public in four locations on Maui June 12 through 15.

The play, created and acted by two Hilo women, tells of the reactions of four women of different ages and generations in the family of a returning Hawaii National Guard soldier to a serious health problem that has surfaced recently in Hawaii’s news papers — the danger of exposure to depleted uranium munitions.

The dad is about to return from Iraq, and the family is awaiting the imminent birth of a baby boy known to have a birth defect.

The creators and actors of the play, nurse-educator and author Lindafaye Kroll, RN BSN, and Hilo business woman Megan Magdalene, are bringing the play to Maui under the sponsorship of Maui Peace Action, after several well-received, powerful performances around the Big Island.

The locations of the four performances on Maui, all at 7:30pm, are: Tuesday, June 12, at the Lahaina Civic Center; Wednesday, June 13, at the Kihei Community Center small meeting room; Thursday, June 14, at the War and Peace Art Exhibit at the Elan Vital Studio, 1134 Makawao Avenue, Makawao; and Friday, June 15, at The Studio Maui, Haiku Marketplace, 810 Haiku Road.

Each live performance will be followed by a talk story session with questions and answers about DU exposure and how to support a testing bill in Hawaii’s Legislature.

In this year’s legislative session, House Bill 1452 to test soils for radioactivity at military firing ranges passed all committees but did not come out of Maui Sen. Roselyn Baker’s Ways and Means committee for funding.

In the meantime, as reported on KITV News April 29, 2007, a plume of radiation far higher than background radiation was measured 30 miles downwind Kona side of the Pohakuloa Training Area and Stryker Brigade firing range on the Big Island.

Because of citizen outcry, the Dept. of Health has agreed to do a series of radiation air tests there and at other firing ranges in the state.

The play was created to educate about the need to test for and clean up depleted uranium (DU) found at military firing ranges on Oahu and the Big Island, according to Honolulu Advertiser articles in May of this year and January of 2006.

In Iraq and Afghanistan, there have been
hundreds of tons of depleted uranium fired.

DU is a powerful penetrator made from nuclear energy industry waste which, when shot and burning its way through a target, aerosolizes into nano particles that are inhaleable, ingestible, re-suspended in wind-carried dust, redistributed globally, and radioactive for a half-life of 4 ½ billion years.

Along with cancers and other illnesses in our military personnel and civilians in the areas, birth defects are also occurring in greater numbers to the children of veterans and to the many parents where DU munitions are used.

The play performances are sponsored by Maui Peace Action, Maui Artists for Peace and the MCC Peace Club. For more information, contact 573-3255.
