I Am Woman, I Am All Women

By Elaine B. Holtz

I am woman, I am all women, and I go beyond color, religion, country or political party.

I am woman, I am all women and in my womb since the beginning of humankind I have provided a space for the children of the earth to grow and develop.

It has been through my pain that a child is born and it is through my body and nurturing that those born of me have survived.

I am woman, I am all women and I am tired.

I am tired of the polluters who take away from the health of my children, my grandchildren and all future generations.

I am tired of the warmongers who take away my young children who are born pure and innocent and turn them into killers.

Killers who kill their own kind and are killed in the name of I do not know what anymore.

I am tired of the greed that creates lack for far to many and abundance for far to few.

I am tired of those who rule continually telling me what is right for my body and that they know what is best therefore making choices for me.

I am tired of the women who sell their souls so they can participate in a mans world, one that is full of fear and destruction.

I am tired of seeing my off spring in countries close and far away destroying all that is needed to sustain the life of all my children.

Those innocent children who are born free only to fall into experiences that create hunger, disease created by humankind’s greed.

A man plants the seed of life deep within me; the great mystery takes that seed into my womb and creates all that has been created.

I am tired of men taking the pleasure in the planting while denying all that I have created what it is entitled to.

I give birth to human beings, not Jews, not Catholics, not Muslims, not Buddhist, not black, not white, not yellow or red.

I am tired of those divisions and I want life to be cherished and valued, I want all life on this our Mother Earth to be cherished and valued.

My soul gets weary and tired and my being becomes angry as I think about those huge bellies and blank stares of children subject to lack because of greed their needs go unnoticed and are deemed unimportant.

Who decided there should be have and have nots when we all belong to and have a stake in our home, our Mother Earth.

All goods, all profits come from our Earth and I ask all mothers,”How can you allow your son or daughter to deprive another mothers sons or daughters their right as humans, as children of this earth, their right to freedom, food, water and shelter?”

“How can you allow your son or daughter to kill another mothers sons or daughters in the name of what?”

I ask women, I ask mothers, I ask grandmothers, I ask fathers, tell your children to drop those guns, tell your children to work for love and peace and equality.

Tell your children who are dropping bombs on others mothers children to STOP and STOP NOW.

Oh what it must feel like for a mother to hear the planes overhead and watch the silver bullets drop from the sky.

Oh what it must have felt like for a mother to see her child die because of lack of water, begging for help on the bridges of Louisiana during hurricane Katrina.

Oh what it must feel like to be a mother listening to her children cry for food or water and none is there.

Oh what it must feel like to be a mother watching her child die because there is no medical treatment or money for that treatment.

As women we must rally together and see there is no them, there is no us, there are only women and children just like us.

We are all one in need.

I am woman, I am all women and in my womb a child is created.

Elaine was moved to reach out when she saw the Willie Nelson quote,
“The life I value is one that is connected to all things.” I’m so glad Elaine took action. It’s one thing to dream about what you want but for true success we need to take action and move toward our dreams.

Elaine says,”We are connected and Thank the Great Spirit for the hearts and minds like performers like Willie Nelson. I thank you again for your response and am sharing the Seed just to confirm what Willie has said. My prayer is that the day comes when we all understand how connected we truly are.”

Elaine B. Holtz produces a television show called, “Women’s Spaces” and the idea behind the program is to introduce ordinary women doing extraordinary things.”I Am Woman, I Am All Women” represents the message Elaine is trying to project.

Elaine says, “It is my hope through my television show and poetry women will want to get more involved and see their place in bringing about peace in this world.” Elaine’s television show, “Women’s Spaces” airs in Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, Windsor and Mendocino in California.

Elaine explains,”The last interview I did which is more the exception to the rule was with Amy Goodman, she was at the Harmony Festival and she allowed an interview with me for our public access television station. I usually interview women in our community who are working for peace and justice in any capacity. I have found there are so many of us doing such marvelous things and I want to get that info out. Having someone like Amy was more of the exception but she supports public access. My plan is to have the shows on the Internet in the next year or so.”

Elaine recommends a film she viewed at the Harmony Festival called, “In Search of the Future”.  The film asks two questions of the visionary elders of a dozen diverse cultures: “Where did we come from, we humans?” and “Where are we headed as a species?”

  4. My dear friend, Elaine, she speaks for all of us grandmothers, and for all parents/grandparents who are heartbroken and weary of the destructive ways of war and hatred. Peace and love will ever be the only answer.

We read your poem as a family tonight and though the message is deeply felt, we agree that as the grown and growing children of our mother earth there is so much lost that we must recapture (of that lost innocence) in order to begin to heal the blight inflicted by human avarice. In the words of some other poet,”let it begin with me.”
    We love you, Elaine!!

  6. Women need to stand up in the light of Elaine’s poem because it is women and only women who can stop this global insanity called war. Men have been utter failures when it comes to developing a world of peace. Thanks, Elaine for standing up and speaking Truth.

  7. My dear Elaine, You said that my speech at last year May 1 rally (which you could not understand because it was in Spanish but you felt it) was the inspiration for this poem. I believe you were moved by a Higher Spirit to guide us toward the road of unity, love and peace, especially in these difficult political times. Thank you for sharing your talent and spirit! Con mucho amor y paz, your sister in the struggle.

  8. Elaine, Wow! This poem was beautifully written. It says what many of us feel.No one wants ill on others and yet even when it comes to environment issues we are guilty of not helping enough. Thank you for putting the word out again in a beautiful well written poem. I too only want peace and love to all the children in the world. I love you, Elaine

    Elaine,

Your poem has expressed so eloquently what women and mothers must feel each day on every continent. What pain and horror we suffer at the hands of a few, but we continue to bring forth life, to nurture, and to spread humanity through it all. You have expressed the sentiments of a wolrd of women. Keep on keeping on!

  10. Elaine,
What a beeeutiful well written poem. I was very moved in my heart & spirit in reading these words that are speaking to the power of truth. The sadness one feels on a daily basis in seeing & hearing of the continued violence against humankind, animals & the environment that is waged (mostly) by men is a very sad/frightening reality we face as a species. It has been my pleasure to have known you for several years and your wisdom, caring and compassion for healing through your words and actions is very inspiring to all.
In Peace, Harmony, Compassion & Luv for all that live on this planet,
    Mark

  11. Right to my heart and my head.
Thanks, Elaine, and all those who’ve written comments.
    Sincerely,
    Marsha

    Yes Elaine,
You speak for so many of us. Yesterday in a workshop on families with refugee women from Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Surinam, India, Serbia, Indonesia I felt so connected with the pain, the struggle, the courage of women starting again in a new land with a new language. Mostly they have been forced to come to Holland because of war and oppression. Thank you.
