Gaza is still the Issue

If you’re in the Austin, Texas area this Saturday, May 9, please enjoy an evening of solidarity and music.

GAZA IS STILL THE ISSUE:  AN EVENING OF SOLIDARITY AND MUSIC

Saturday, May 9, 2009 from 6:00 – 10:00 PM

Earlier this year Sahar Abusada, a refugee from Gaza and chair of the Palestinians for Peace and Democracy (Houston-based) launched a grassroots campaign to provide tents for the Palestinian families whose homes where destroyed by Israel’s assault on Gaza this past December and January.

During this emotional journey Mrs. Abusada met with wounded Palestinians and learned about their stories.  She joins us as she shares her findings; Q and A to follow.

The program will continue with an intimate solo performance by Fared Shafinury starting at 8:00pm.

Snacks will be provided by various Middle Eastern restaurants in town. We ask that you donate $5-10 (sliding scale) at the door towards families in Gaza and Austin Coalition for Palestine funds.

BYOP (bring your own pillow to sit on).

Location: 1654 West 6th Street at Campbell (just east of Mopac), Gateway Apartments (UT Student Housing) Community Center.  Going West on 6th, make a right into Campbell and follow the signs.

*Fared Shafinury and Tehranosaurus*
Critically acclaimed as ‘a musical mosaic and cultural fusion… varies from jazz to indie rock to Hindustani music with a splendid concordance of classical Iranian music at its core,’ Fared Shafinury and Tehranosaurus offer an unforgettable night of melodic sounds of the setar, santur and vocal repertoire, known as the radiff (Iranian.com).”

Farid has played many times with the legendary Mohsen Namjoo and members of his ensemble have played with the likes of Yo-yo Ma.  To get a taste for his music go to faredshafinury.com.
