This article represents Part 2 in our series featuring the 50 high school students who participated in the University of Texas at Austin (UT) Global Ethics and Conflict Resolution 2007 Symposium. Please read Part 1 if you didn’t get a chance to see the groundbreaking work by Dr. Madeline Maxwell, Director of the UT Summer Symposium and founder of the University of Texas Project on Conflict Resolution.

Please take a moment to read Peaceful Moments magazine online to compliment your video experience. Inspirational historical facts proving we each possess the power to create peaceful solutions.

Another participant, Tanya, expressed her concern for all of us to maintain a global perspective for conflict resolution. She shared her experiences of seeing much of the economic disparities in Indonesia.

Her comment was directed to one of our Humanitarian Buying panelists when she said, “What you guys are doing is great! In Indonesia, some people don’t even have clean water, but everyone just kind of walks by and doesn’t pay attention. No one wants to get involved.”

If there is one thing that is certain about this summer’s symposium, as the students reflected on their time at the University of Texas at Austin their conclusion was that THEY can be INVOLVED.

Overall, the participants seemed to walk away with a posture of empowerment, an eye to a better future, and a determination for peace and resolution at the local and global level.

In addition, the UT students, staff, and distinguished faculty walked away encouraged seeing our youth not only dedicated to peace, but also possessing the skills and creativity vital for bringing peace about.

“What I liked was when we got into looking at things from the global level, and that we were all able to say what we had to say and even be able to depend on an intelligent, respectful response. The sense of community was really strong at camp too. The friends I made there were pretty incredible.” Emma Wingfield

It was an amazing time. Everyone was really nice and a lot of fun. I made friends with everyone and I am still in touch with them. At night all us girls would meet in one room and spend hours talking and laughing. It was also a great experience to be around people with the same interests that I have. I enjoyed the speakers and activities. I learned useful skills for everyday life and learned interesting things about the world.” Amy Worob

The UT Summer Symposium is an annual event that is supported by the UT Willie Nelson Center students for Peace and Conflict Resolution.
