Urgent Wild Horse Help Needed Today

The Horse
Our Symbol of Freedom
Most of us believe the horse was brought over by the Spanish, but in fact, this beautiful creature was here long before that. We now have fossils that prove the horse did in fact, originate in North America.
The Native Americans have a saying, “the grass remembers them.” Horses readily took to the western plains, because they started out there, long ago. They died out, possibly because they were over-hunted, or because of drastic climate changes, but they are a re-introduced native species, not a introduced non-native species. You can visit Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument and see the fossils for yourself.
We have relied on the horse for many things, for many, many years. Without them, The West surely would not have flourished and become the United States of America, the birthday we celebrate this weekend.
Please take a few moments to watch our video, and while you are enjoying your holiday, giving thanks to our forefathers and for our freedom, please remember to thank the horse by taking action and letting your representatives know how you feel.
Right now, in particular danger, are 11 herds of wild horses in Nevada. The Bureau of Land Management is planning to “zero out” all eleven herds on the basis that they are over-populating the area they have been given on which to survive. Zeroing out means taking them all away!
The deadline for public opinion on this matter is July 6, 2009, (however this is something where you should voice your opinion even after that date as it is a trend happening across the entire country).
This is expensive, morally wrong, in direct opposition to the mandate of the Wild Horse and Burro Act which was signed into law in order to protect and preserve the wild horses and burros of our country, and not based on true research and facts.
It is a move to clear the way for cattle ranching on public land, and other destructive practices like gas and oil leases and mining. The Bureau of Land Management is supposed to protect our public lands, not sell it off to the highest bidder.
Please make your voice heard, stand up for the wild horses and stand up for our public lands. This is the land of the free and the home of the brave!
You can easily contact BLM Director John Ruhs by clicking here…the letter is already written for you and will go directly to his email at his office so it can be read by Monday morning.
Fact: America’s wild horses are being eradicated in violation of the Wild Free-Roaming Horse & Burro Act, which protects them as “living symbols” of our Nation’s spirit.
Fact: From over 2 million in the 1800s, fewer than 25,000 remain on our public lands.
Fact: There are now more wild horses in government holding pens than remain in the wild.
Fact: The round-ups continue, and a recent change in the law opens the door to thousands being sent to slaughter.
Fact: Although in-the-wild management would save millions of tax-dollars, special interests have been successful in pressuring the government to systematically remove wild horses from public lands – specifically corporate cattle interests who want our horses replaced with private cattle for subsidized grazing.
For more information about our wild horses, and to hear interviews with Ecologist/Biologist Craig C. Downer who has studied the horses for years, plus country western sensation Lacy J. Dalton and wild horse advocates, please click here.
We hope you have a very safe and happy fourth of July and thanks for helping our symbol of freedom! Please know that it does not matter where you live, you can help the horses!

We asked our BigBlendMagazine.com readers: ‘Horses are a historically a symbol of the old west – what do they mean to you?’
Here are some of their answers:
“Without the horse being introduced into America modes of transportation would have been completely different. Think of the impact the horse had on movements of the Indian tribes that lived on the plains. How far reaching it has been in our history. The fact that now they kill wild horses as a means of clearing the range for cattle is sad.“ – Roger from Gilbert, AZ
“The Horse has been a vital part of the old west from the settlers to the gold miners, farmers and so on. Without the horse the west would not have made it.” – Rebecca from Antelope, CA
“Being from Nevada where we still have wild horses they mean Freedom to me. Incredible animals that still need protection to preserve that Freedom!” – Cynthia in Las Vegas, NV
“They’re a symbol of my family to me. My family were riders in the Pony Express.” – Angela from Eureka Springs, AR
“Horses have really helped man and civilization. They are amazing, intelligent, and loyal creatures!” – Erica from Greensboro, NC
“When I first saw the wild horses in Nevada, I was already in my 40s. The majesty of those animals, looking just slightly different than the domesticated ones I was accustomed to seeing, tugged at my heart strings. They are a magnificent creature representing a part of our heritage that can never be replaced. They should be cherished like the national treasure they are.’ – Betty in Julian, CA
“They made the old west what it was.” – Paula from El Cajon, CA
“I love thinking about the old west how these majestic animals helped our ancestors pull wagons, plow fields and were the only means of transportation.” – Vaughn in Salt Lake City, UT

Director John Ruhs & Secretary Salazar:
Wild horses and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of The West; they contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people.
The Bureau of Land Management’s current policy of aggressive removal of wild horses favors private cattle interests over the will of the people; this is unacceptable and un-American, and a waste of our taxpayer dollars.
We respectfully ask that the BLM and the Department of the Interior review the scientific findings that contradict BLM’s claims of wild horse overpopulation and negative impact on the range; – a moratorium on all round-ups until actual numbers of wild horses and burros on public lands have been independently assessed; and restoration of the Herd Management Areas designated by the 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act.
We ask for an implementation of in-the-wild management, and that fences currently blocking the wild horses from water supplies, be removed. Further, we ask that your plans for zeroing out herds be stopped immediately.
America’s wild horses are a reintroduced native wildlife species and an American zoological treasure. I ask you to ensure that they will be allowed to thrive in genetically viable herds for future generations to enjoy on our public lands.

If our so called public servants are not convinced to cease and desist on their nefarious plan to eliminate these wild horses they must be sued. We have the law and the truth and true justice on our side, which is to say on the side of the horses and their freedom here!

Senator Leahy Proposes ” Truth Commission to investigate and Online petition to investigate and prosecute constitutional abuses of Bush administration. Senator Leahy ~ Please investigate the documents from the BLM. One would hope that the time invested in this information be known and discovered. I hope and pray that this information dark and shocking as it may be is investigated. I hope for the wild horses sake, The Cloud Foundation and horse advocates as well as myself in the USA are represented and not and the laws for horses in the wild horse and burro act. Here’s body of the petition: I hereby join Senator Patrick Leahy’s call for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission, to investigate the Bush-Cheney Administration’s constitutional abuses so we make sure they never happen again. These abuses may include the use of torture, warrantless wiretapping, extraordinary rendition, and executive override of laws. A truth and reconciliation commission should be tasked with seeking answers so that we can develop a shared understanding of the failures of the recent past. Rather than vengeance, we need a fair-minded pursuit of what actually happened. The best way to move forward is getting to the truth and finding out what happened — so we can make sure it does not happen in any way shape or form. Thank you for any consideration. Restore Our American Mustangs (ROAM) Act, sponsored by House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick Rahall for a vote tomorrow Contact your represenatative ASAP!!
FRIDAY, July 24, 2009
House to Vote on Bill to Protect Wild Horses
Dear Humanitarian:
We have just learned that H.R. 1018, the Restore Our American Mustangs (ROAM) Act, sponsored by House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick Rahall, will be voted on before the full House of Representatives tomorrow (July 17, 2009). Chairman Rahall’s ROAM Act will responsibly restore many of the guaranteed protections originally established in the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 that have been gutted by stealth riders and Bureau of Land Management’s wanton mismanagement of these magnificent animals for decades. At a time when there are nearly as many wild horses in captivity as on the range this legislation is urgently needed.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Because time is of the essence please call your US Representative RIGHT NOW and urge her/him to support Chairman Rahall and vote “YES” on H.R. 1018.
To find your Representative please visit http://www.compassionindex.org/. While there, you can also send a quick email in support of the bill if you have not done so already. You can also call the Capitol Switchboard at (202 ) 224-3121 and ask to be transferred to your Representative.
For more information on wild horses, please visit http://www.awionline.org/ht/d/sp/i/11223/pid/11223.
Additional Facts:
The Restore Our American Mustangs (ROAM) Act (H.R. 1018) will restore protections for our country’s wild horses and burros that were stripped out of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act in recent years.
The ROAM Act will ensure that our mustangs and burros are once again protected from slaughter.
The Act also seeks to reclaim land – some 19 million acres – taken away from these magnificent animals since the 1971 Act went into law.
At a time when there are nearly as many wild horses and burros in captivity as there are in the wild, this legislation is badly needed.
The ROAM Act makes sound fiscal sense, too; the Bureau of Land Management currently spends nearly half of its annual budget on caring for wild horses and burros removed from the range. This legislation will enable the BLM to keep more horses on the range which will be better for the welfare of the animals and better for American tax-payers.
Passage of the ROAM Act will mean that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which currently has primary authority for managing these animals, focuses once again on managing them as an integral part of the rangeland.
Please be sure to share this eAlert with f riends, family and coworkers and urge them to call their legislator first thing!

Dear Kenneth Interior Secretary Salazar,
Interior Secretary Salazar and the Bureau of Land Management I’m asking you to stop the Roundups of Cloud and his Family!
I am writing to express my extreme disappointment in THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT’S (BLM) DECISION to continue THEIR plan to euthanize or hold in captivity thousands of wild horses and burros and ROUNDUPS ~ AT THE EXPENSE OF THE AMERICAN TAXPAYER.
The Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act (1971) was created with the hope of managing healthy herds of wild horses and burros on healthy Western rangelands. With the goal of managing the sizes of these herds, the BLM believes that wild horses and burros consume unfair amounts of forage on BLM lands. “On March 3, 2009, it was stated by a BLM representative that the forage depletion on public lands leaves cattle with nothing to eat. Contrary to that statement, a Wild Horse Ecologist, Craig C. Downer, of Nevada, stated in his speech (Wild Horse Speech With Tables And Charts, Wild Horse Summit, Las Vegas, Nevada, October 2008) that wild horses and burros only consume a mere 5.6% of the forage consumed by livestock on BLM land. “
It is not necessary to hold these wild horses and burros in captivity or round them up for slaughter (an expense to taxpayers). THE Cloud Foundation OFFERS an Alternative Herd Plan & SOLUTION. (The Cloud Foundation Web) This was given to the BLM in June 2009.
The BLM holding costs for the BLM in 2009 are $33 million, and in 2014 it is estimated to be $85 million. This business plan will help unravel the problem that the BLM has created in gathering horses off the range land at the tax payers’ expense.
1. Stop the BLM from managing our wild horses and Clouds Herd to extinction.2. Halt all round-ups of wild horses until range conditions and herd numbers can be verified.
3. Return wild horses in holding to the 100+ herd areas (19+ million acres) that have been zeroed out.
4. Expand the Pryor Mountain. Wild Horse Range for Clouds Herd & protect herd at viable population level of at least 150 adult horses until range is expanded.
Sincerely thank you for any and all consideration to saving our National Treasure and Cloud‘s Herd and family.

Massive Roundup Still Planned for Cloud’s Herd
Please act now to stop the destruction of this Unique Spanish Herd
Dear Friends of Cloud’s Herd in the Pryor Mountains;
We are doing everything we can through political and legal avenues to save Cloud’s herd but BLM is set on putting helicopters in the air starting around September 1st. They plan to roundup all the horses and remove over 70, including older horses, mares and foals.
The BLM and the Department of Interior are not listening to the public. They appear to be disregarding even Dr. Gus Cothran, a noted equine geneticist, who told the BLM, again, that this unique Spanish herd must be managed at minimum levels of 150-200 to keep the herd viable. Read Dr. Cothran’s letter here.
BLM’s plan to remove to 70 horses is unnecessary and unwise. This places more horses in danger- few good homes are available in the currently flooded horse market. Older horses are at risk of being bought by killer buyers and others may end up in government holding at risk of being killed by the BLM. Watch my YouTube piece on this issue here. Some may even be put down after capture. This happened to horses during the recent Challis Herd round up and in the Sand Wash roundup last fall in October (view YouTube piece here).
Call and email President Obama and Vice President Biden and tell them that you do not want a misguided agency destroying Americas wild horses. 202-456-9000 or 202-456-1111 or write. Tell them to intervene on behalf of the Pryor Wild Horse Herd! The BLM appears to be on a rampage to manage wild horses to extinction.
Send this brief press release (copy and paste from below) to media and friends- we must stop this unnecessary roundup now. In the Challis round up in Idaho round up just last week six horses were killed, six foals were orphaned and the majority of the 400+ horses lost their freedom. All this destruction when the range looks the best it has in over 80 years according to local residents. Read more about the Challis herd round up here.
I’m pleased to share some good news! Judge Rules to Save West Douglas Herd in Colorado. After more than a decade of legal battles and BLM’s efforts to zero out the West Douglas herd in western Colorado, a judge has ruled against the BLM and in favor of the horses. This ruling is due to the enormous efforts of attorney Valerie Stanley (The Cloud Foundation’s attorney) and the Colorado Wild Horse and Burro Coalition, especially Toni Moore and Barb Flores and others on the western slope, who have worked for years to save this small, historically significant herd.
Never give up. Keep calling and writing.
Thank you and happy trails,

PRESS RELEASE
Bureau of Land Management on Rampage to Destroy Famous Wild Horse Herd
For Immediate Release August 10, 2009
Cloud and the wild horses of Montana’s Pryor Mountains are world famous but fame it appears is not going to protect the herd from a drastic government round up planned to begin September 1st in their spectacular wilderness home.
There are currently only 190 wild horses (one year and older) living in the PryorMountains. The BLM plans to remove 70 of them, plus foals. According to the foremost equine geneticist, Dr. Gus Cothran, 150-200 adult horses are needed in the herd to ensure their genetic diversity, which is vital to their long term survival.
These 70 horses would be placed in jeopardy. Any horses over 10 years of age can be bought directly by killer buyers and transported over the Northern border to Canadian slaughterhouses or south into Mexico. Younger horses not adopted would be put into government holding with 33,000 others that the BLM has removed from the wild and has proposed killing because they can no longer afford to feed them.
BLM cites poor range condition as the reason to remove the horses but abundant snow and rain for the past two and a half years has produced wonderful range conditions according to all who have visited Cloud and his herd. The Agency is not listening to anyone. They want this herd gutted. Nearly all the mares returned to the range would be given an experimental two-year infertility drug, PZP-22.
This helicopter round up is just one among many that the BLM is trying to complete, perhaps before the Obama Administration can catch up with what is going on.
The PryorMountain wild horses are descendants of the Lewis and Clark horses who were stolen by the Crow Indians in the early 1800’s. They can be traced further back to the horses brought over with the Spanish Conquistadors in 1500 making them one of the most Spanish of all wild horse herds in North America.

11th Hour for Cloud’s Herd,
URGENT MESSAGE ABOUT THE PYRORS
Please act now to stop this unnecessary and cruel round up— the BLM still plans to move forward on September 1st
The Bureau of Land Management is rounding up and eliminating 12 herds (650 horses) off 1.4 million acres in Nevada right now– next they plan to destroy Cloud’s herd with a massive removal of 70 horses that would include OLDER HORSES and YOUNG FOALS.
Many of the horses you have come to love in the Cloud shows and will meet in the new Cloud show on October 25th will lose their families and their freedom next week. By zeroing out whole herds and reducing others to below genetic viability, the BLM is circumventing the will of Congress. The House just passed the Restoring of American Mustangs (ROAM) act and the Senate will review this bill (now S.1579) when they return from recess in September. Is BLM just trying to do as much irrevocable damage to America’s wild horses as they can before Congress can act?
This round up will start on September 1st unless we can stop it. Removing 70 horses will destroy this unique little Spanish herd, leaving them well below the bare minimum for genetic viability. The range is in great condition and the horses are healthy. This removal should be stopped. Please do all you can to help! Listen to Ginger Kathrens on Endangered Stream Live– a special edition show “Angels for Cloud”
National Call in Day for Cloud is Friday, August 28th — SPREAD THE WORD! Have your kids call in and write too– These horses need to be preserved for future generations and we must act NOW

E-mail Obama
2. Ask Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar to stop this round up

Nureau of Land Management on Rampage to Destroy Famous Wild Horse Herd
Date: 2009-08-26, 9:18AM PDT
I’m writing to bring an important story and critical issue to the American public- As I write this, BLM is totally removing all the wild horses in 12 legally designated herds on 1.4 million acres in Eastern Nevada. No cattle have been removed and all grazing permits have been renewed at the ridiculously low price of $1.36 per month per cow/calf pair. Yet, BLM cites range condition for the removal of all the wild horses. The vast majority of these horses will be added to the 33,000 already contained in holding facilities. The cost of these unnecessary actions? $100,000 per day according to BLM. If I didn’t know better, I would think George W. Bush was still at the helm. Water from this area is to be siphoned off to Las Vegas and rumors abound about Oil and Gas leases. Bottom line—-nothing has changed, except it has gotten worse. BLM is out of control. They are totally ignoring the law.
While there may be little that can be done about wild horses losing their freedom in Nevada, there is still hope for the world famous Pryor Herd in Montana. Despite thousands of letters, emails and phone calls, the BLM will gut this small Montana herd beginning on September 1 when a helicopter will sweep down on spectacular sub-alpine meadows. The Pryor Herd is famous because they are home to the pale stallion, Cloud and his family. I have documented his life since his first day of life when he tottered out of the trees right in front of my camera 14 years ago. I have produced three films about him for Nature on PBS (third film Cloud: Challenge of the Stallions premiers on October 25). The Pryor Mountain wild horses are descendants of the Lewis and Clark horses who were stolen by the Crow Indians in the early 1800’s. They can be traced further back to the horses brought over with the Spanish Conquistadors in 1500 making them the most Spanish of all wild horse herds in North America. Many of the horses, like Cloud’s 18-year-old mother, that millions of people have come to love through these documentaries could be taken away from their homes.
Despite their historic significance and their fame (Cloud was voted the most popular program in the 25 year history of the Nature series), they are not safe from BLM. It seems that their fame may actually be working against them. I sense that BLM doesn’t want to “lose” this one as it is so highly visible.
There are currently only 190 wild horses living in the incredible beauty of the Pryor Mountains. The BLM plans to remove 70 of them, plus foals. According to the foremost equine geneticist, Dr. Gus Cothran, 150-200 horses are needed in the herd to ensure their genetic diversity, which is vital to their long term survival. Dr. Cothran’s letter is attached.
70 horses would be placed in jeopardy. As you may know there is currently no market for most well-trained horses, let along wild ones. The BLM will need to remove older horses as well to reach their quota. Any horses over 10 years of age can be bought directly by killer buyers and transported over the Northern border to Canadian slaughterhouses or south into Mexico. This removal is just unimaginably cruel and unnecessary.
The BLM cites poor range condition as the reason to remove the horses. This is absolutely untrue. Abundant snow and rain for the past two and a half years has produced wonderful range conditions according to all who have visited Cloud and his herd. (Incidentally, these visitors come from all over the United States and the world.) Yet, BLM is telling the public that the abundance of wild flowers atop the mountain is proof that the range is in a declining condition. They say the horses don’t eat wildflowers and that is why there are so many flowers. While this statement is laughable, it is the type of inaccurate information that the BLM puts out to the media and, I believe, to their superiors in the Department of Interior. Range specialists have written to BLM on this issue as well but the Agency is not listening to anyone. They want this herd gutted.
This helicopter round up is just one among many that the BLM is trying to complete, before the Obama Administration can catch up with what is going on. We have crossed every “t” and dotted every “i” in trying to save the herd. We have attended every meeting, had supporters of Cloud and his herd write thousands of letters and emails. We have done everything including filing suits against the BLM, trying to stop this action.
This is a David and Goliath battle and the horses are currently losing. The sad thing is that the majority of the American public doesn’t know that we are on the verge of losing our wild horses. You can preview the Cloud programs online at: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes/cloud-wild-stallion-of-the-rockies/wild-stallion-of-the-rockies-introduction/29/ Many of the horses that millions of people have fallen in love with may be removed and face uncertain futures before this third show even airs.
I look forward to talking to you more and I hope you might be able to help save theses horses and share their story with your viewers.
Most sincerely,
Ginger Kathrens
PRESS RELEASE
Bureau of Land Management on Rampage to Destroy Famous Wild Horse Herd
For Immediate Release August 10, 2009
Cloud and the wild horses of Montana’s Pryor Mountains are world famous but fame it appears is not going to protect the herd from a drastic government round up planned to begin September 1st in their spectacular wilderness home.
There are currently only 190 wild horses (one year and older) living in the Pryor Mountains.
Older horses would have to be removed- including many of the horses who people have come to love through the Cloud programs on PBS- like Cloud’s 18-year-old mother.
This helicopter round up is just one among many that the BLM is trying to complete, before the Obama Administration can catch up with what is going on.
The Pryor Mountain wild horses are descendents of the Lewis and Clark horses who were stolen by the Crow Indians in the early 1800’s. They can be traced further back to the horses brought over with the Spanish Conquistadors in 1500 making them the most Spanish of all wild horse herds in North America.

Subject: Re: PRESS RELEASE: BLM Rushes Forward with Roundup of World Famous Wild Horse Herd Before Senate Can Act
Famous Wild Horse Herd Granted Two-Day Reprieve from Massive Roundup
For Immediate Release
BILLINGS, MONTANA- August 31, 2009: The Pryor Mountain Wild Horses, perhaps best known from the popular Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies PBS Nature series, have two more days of freedom before an unprecedented round up could begin. The Pryors roundup has been delayed for two days to allow Judge Sullivan of the Federal District Court to hear the case brought against the BLM by The Cloud Foundation and Front Range Equine Rescue.
The Bureau of Land Management, responsible for managing wild horses on public lands in the United States, plans to round up all the horses in Montana’s only remaining wild herd and remove 70 horses plus four or more foals. This will leave a non-viable herd of only 120 horses according to respected equine geneticist, Gus Cothran, Ph.D., of Texas A&M University. The Pryor Mountain wild horses are a unique Spanish herd renowned for their primitive markings, historical connections, and spectacular habitat.
BLM is dispatching National Wild Horse and Burro Program staff for this round up, perhaps because they expect trouble from humane advocates who are currently being prevented from observing this roundup. “Never before in my experience have plans been so vague and operations so secret in the Pryors,” says Ginger Kathrens, Volunteer Executive Director of The Cloud Foundation.” The BLM will be closing down roads to the mountain top where the majority of the herd spends their days grazing peacefully in their subalpine meadows. Young foals, only days old will be driven by helicopters and are in serious danger of being hurt or killed. Billings BLM Field Manager Jim Sparks told one advocate that they would expect a loss of 2% or six horses as a result of this operation.
The BLM has always had signs posted at the entrances to the horse range that tell the public to ‘report violations of harassment, death or removals.’ “Why are they above the law?” Asks Crow Tribe Historian and Elder, Howard Boggess. “Everything that is against the law for me they are planning to do to these horses. This is a very sad thing as far as I’m concerned. The horses have lived here for over 200 years. Even under the harassment of the BLM they’ve survived since 1971.”
The BLM claims that it is necessary to remove 70 horses in order to “maintain a thriving ecological balance.” However, the range is still green in late August following three years of above average precipitation after a multi-year drought. The horses are fat, preparing to go into winter. “Why are they removing nearly half the horses after the drought is over? I’ve told them [the BLM] if you take these 70 horses you’ve destroyed the bloodline, the gene pool will no longer be there,” continues Boggess. “Their whole goal is to get rid of the horses.”
“What they are proposing to do is criminal— people locally and all across the Nation worked so hard to save these horses from eradication in 1968,” explains Kathrens. “This range was specially designated for wild horses, the first of its kind in the nation. This is their refuge and it is about to be invaded.”
The BLM plans to remove 17 horses over ten years old and by BLM’s Standard Operating Procedures, “old, sick or lame horses shall be destroyed.” “When they take out the old horses they remove the ones that know the way to the water, the good grass, the way around the canyon – they’re taking out all of the knowledge of the herd,” Boggess explains. “It is really sad to sit there and look at the horses and think that in the next ten days they’ll be taken off this range and they’ll never see it again.”
This case is scheduled to be heard on Wednesday, September 2nd, and thousands of people around the United States and the world await the decision of Judge Sullivan which will decide the fate of the unique and beloved Pryor Wild Horse Herd.

Help us keep you updated– join Cloud on Facebook and Twitter now! 11th Hour for Cloud’s Herd – Act Now!!! Wednesday, 26 August 2009 13:11

Status Update Wednesday, 02 September 2009 16:48
The DC District Court Judge denied our request for a Temporary Restraining Order. We are not giving up on these horses though– KEEP CALLING YOUR SENATORS and CONGRESS PEOPLE, All MEDIA OUTLETS and tell your friends– this is another treasure being destroyed if we can’t stop this unneccessary, callous and massive roundup.
We will do our best to keep you updated- the round up is scheduled to begin tomorrow, Thursday Sept. 3 and over the next few days or week the BLM plans to remove over 70 horses– from older mares and stallions to young foals. Don’t give up.
Who Has Been Hired to Round Up Cloud’s Herd? Wednesday, 02 September 2009 14:28
Dave Cattoor is a contractor hired by the BLM to perform wild horse round-ups. He and his wife and son run a business largely funded by the American taxpayer to harass and remove wild horses and burros. He was indicted by a federal grand jury and pled guilty to illegally hunting wild horses, aiding and abetting in 1992. He rounded up protected American mustangs, corralled into pens, loaded them into trucks, and hauled them to a slaughter house in Texas where they lost their lives. It was government theft and animal abuse. Among wild horse and burro advocates, he has a reputation of being cruel and inhumane. Photographs of newborn foals run to exhaustion, found hog tied on the range, horses and burros bleeding from their nostrils, broken legs and injured during exhausting gallops to captured pens are displayed on many wild horse and burro web sites.
He is currently being investigated by the Department of Interior Inspector General for procurement fraud. It is known from federal contracting web sites that he has earned 13 million dollars since 2000 for which records are available. It is believed he has earned more than 21 million dollars since his conviction. Both he and his wife spoke separately before the Wild Horse and Advisory Board in 2009 and advocated for the continued use of helicopter round ups in an attempt to influence the boards recommendation to continue their lucrative contracting business. Federal law prohibits the use of contractors that have been convicted of a crime. Generally, a indictment would eliminate a contractor from consideration. However, Mr. Cattoor has been rewarded and made a millionaire many times over by the BLM despite the public outrage.
Fully knowing the public’s concern about Mr. Dave Cattoor ‘s inhumane practices, the BLM Billings, Montana office have denied humane groups request to placed humane observers on the ground with full access during the Pryor round to ensure animals are treated humanely. Wild horses advocates have advised the BLM Billlings office as well as BLM officials in Washington DC that foals only day old and heavily pregnant mares are among those the contractor plans to run long distances for captured.

Crow Elder & Historian Speaks Against Roundup Tuesday, 01 September 2009 00:00
Howard Boggess, Member of the Crow Tribe of Indians, Elder and Historian talks about the Pryor Wild Horses he’s known all his life. Mr. Boggess discusses what could happen if the roundup of Cloud’s herd goes forward on Sept. 4th. Everything that is against the law for me they are planning to do to these horses. This is a very sad thing as far as I’m concerned. The horses have lived here for over 200 years. Even under the harassment of the BLM they’ve survived since 1971.
