First License Issued To Montana Hemp Farmer

Sow Hemp Everywhere

Montana has issued its first license for an industrial hemp-growing operation, setting up a possible test case of whether the Drug Enforcement Administration is willing to override a state law allowing propagation of the plant.

Hemp is similar to illegal marijuana but without the mind-altering ingredient of the drug. Montana’s Legislature in 2001 approved the commercial cultivation of hemp, although federal law still prohibits such activity.

Montana Department of Agriculture attorney Cort Jensen said the first license issued under the state law, on Oct. 14, went to a woman who wants to grow hemp on 160 acres in Madison County.

Hemp is grown in parts of Canada and Europe and has a range of uses, from fibers for clothing to a source of biofuels.

  1. Oh am I glad to hear this. It will not be long until this grows and grows all over this Union.

  2. This is excellent, hopefully the feds won’t squash it. Grow Hemp for victory!

  3. This story will be interesting to watch. The feds are supposed to leave med cannabis users alone. How about hemp farmers? Hemp can’t get you high. What would be the feds reason for stopping or arresting this farmer? I think the tide is getting too great for them to say much.

  4. Oh and…Thank to you Wille Nelson.

  5. The feds may stop this. The textile companies, oil companies, lumber companies and so, so, many others will loose billions of dollers in profits if hemp is allowed to be farmed. I myself would love to grow hemp just for the fact that it is a renewable resource.

  6. I hope that this request to the DEA for the permit does not get the same “review process” as others have experienced.
