Thank you, Willie Nelson, for your compassion. You are a beacon of light for exercising your compassion in so many ways. It is daunting to begin a list because you reach out and touch so many it is virtually certain the list will be incomplete.
Compassion is not a word randomly chosen. No other word is as appropriate in describing how you live your life.
“Compassion is the keen awareness of the interdependence of all things.” Thomas Merton
“Compassion is the ultimate and most meaningful embodiment of emotional maturity. It is through compassion that a person achieves the highest peak and deepest reach in his or her search for self-fulfillment.” Arthur Jersild
“Compassion is not sentiment but is making justice and doing works of mercy. Compassion is not a moral commandment but a flow and overflow of the fullest human and divine energies.” Matthew Fox
“The whole purpose of religion is to facilitate love and compassion, patience, tolerance, humility, forgiveness.” H.H. the Dalai Lama
A message is found in all great spiritual, religious and philosophic writings. This message proves true in everyday life and throughout history. The message is found in the writings of great thinkers, even some who do not believe in God.
The message is that
if we believe the world is a place of darkness then we contribute to the darkness that other people perceive and experience.
The message continues that
if we believe the world is a place of light then we contribute to the light that other people perceive and experience.
The message tells us
our experience of the world is the sum of what all individuals believe. We, all together, decide if the world is a place of darkness or light.
In our day-to-day lives, this message plays out regardless of purported religious, philosophical or spiritual beliefs. Indeed, a person does not need any such belief to see the proof of the truth of this message.
Compassion is the work of introducing light into dark places. It is more than merely nodding your head and wearing a T-shirt. Compassion is evident only in action.
I see your compassion in your work with Farm Aid.
I see your compassion in your work to save horses from slaughter.
I see your compassion in your work on developing renewable fuels and energy.
I see your compassion in your work for peace.
I hear your compassion in your songs.
I know you reach out and help people, animals and the environment whenever it is within your power to do so. No word coveys this as well as compassion. Not only your caring but the proof of your caring through your actions makes the world a better place.
Thank you, Willie Nelson, for showing and sharing the light of your compassion. The world is a better place because of you.
