Hear ”A Peaceful Solution” by Will Freed 2
Will Freed takes “A Peaceful Solution” international both lyrically and musically. First, he takes the lyrics out of the American context and sings about a global peaceful solution. Second, Will Freed performs “A Peaceful Solution” in a variety of musical styles that span the globe.
The first half of Will Freed’s version seems to be asking a question. It asks for a peaceful solution. Its mood is subdued and quiet, almost somber.
The second half seems to be answering the question posed in the first half. The tempo picks up and we are asked to reach out. In this case, Will Freed reaches out with festive song made for dance.
Of course, this treatment of “A Peaceful Solution” lengthens the format. In this case, Will Freed takes the time to construct a narrative.
Opening with a small audio montage of news clips illustrating today’s global environment he quickly moves into the first half of the song acknowledging the state of the world.
One must recognize the state one is in before progress can be made.
Then the song moves from merely recognizing the state of the world to activity. In this case the activity becomes reaching out.
Once we are asked to reach out then the entire feel of the song dramatically changes to affirming the progress towards a peaceful resolution.
We’ve heard Will Freed’s musical work before. First, when he offered two of his songs to the Willie Nelson Peace Research Institute audience. Second, when he produced his first version of “A Peaceful Solution.”
We are thankful that Will Freed has taken the time to create another version of “A Peaceful Solution” and this time turning it into a truly international affair. You can hear more of his music at Will Freed’s MySpace profile.
* * * * * Artist’s Statement * * * * *
Why are you so passionate about creating peace?
I am passionate about peace and freedom because it is the very foundation of the principles for which I stand. These are all that is good and makes for worthwhile living: love, compassion, truth, humility, gentleness, openness, sincerity, etc.
War undoubtedly represents the opposite: hate, rape, cunning, cruelty and all the things a sane person would never wish for their children and loved ones. How could one therefore not be passionate about peace?
How long have you been working for peace?
To be honest, I only started to seriously contribute some of my work for peaceful solutions in the last few years.
What motivates you to work for peace and the environment?
Great artists and personalities of past and present times motivate me. Conscience and becoming increasingly aware of how short and precious our journey of life is further inspire my work. It is further our responsibility to preserve the environment for future generations. By respecting and loving all living beings, one is naturally motivated.
Why have you chosen the path of Art for Peace?
Artists throughout the ages have taught us to look at life from various angles and perspectives. I am only one more who searches and attempts to contribute to this effort. Expansion of consciousness is essential for the human race to survive, grow and find solutions for the many difficulties we will have to face now and in the future. Artists are just one segment of the world community who can make positive contributions to peace but an important one nonetheless.
What are your ideas for peaceful solutions?
Our first task should be to make sacrifices for others. In all our efforts, we should be able to embody generosity in thought and action, to forgive what is inferior in others and seek out the good. To be able to accomplish this, it takes great personalities and leaders, which sadly are missing, in our present times.
My heroes are great men like Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Einstein and the countless martyrs who have given their freedom or their very lives for the betterment of the human condition. Communication, openness and the ability to forgive and start anew are the first essential steps to create a better world.
