Bush Refuses to Give Peace a Chance

Congress thoughtfully and carefully crafted the $124.2 billion war funding bill vetoed by President Bush. The bill fully funded the president’s war request, including the troop escalation he demanded and allowed him to leave approximately 60,000 U.S. troops in Iraq indefinitely while setting a date for a troop redeployment to begin.

“A bipartisan majority of Congress sent the president a bill to fully fund our troops and change the mission in Iraq. The president refused to sign this bill. That’s his right, but now he has an obligation to explain his plan to responsibly end this war.” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Let us be clear about something. There was no “Iraq Withdrawal” bill. Congress gave Bush everything he asked for and only then expressed the desires of The People of the United States. What has been vetoed is the Iraq Emergency Supplemental Spending Bill.

Please do not be deceived by the White House spin propagated by mainstream media. It is no surprise corporate news services support the White House’s public relations effort. Once again the White House attempts to fool The People of the United States. Once again the White House tries to make a fool out of you.

“The president talks about ‘funding for the troops,’ but what he wants is funding to continue an unjustifiable war. To support our troops, Congress must de-fund this war,” said Nancy Lessin, co-founder of Military Families Speak Out.

“The president wants a blank check,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi moments after Bush’s veto. “The Congress is not going to give it to him.”

“If the president thinks by vetoing this bill, he’ll stop us from working to change the direction of the war in Iraq, he is mistaken,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said. “The president has put our troops in the middle of a civil war,” said Reid. “Reality on the ground proves what we all know: A change of course is needed.” He added, “A veto means denying our troops the resources and the strategy that they need.”

These are strong words by the Democratic Leaders. The People of the United States now must see that they honor their words. We have already seen Pelosi back off impeachment. Thank you Rep. Dennis Kucinich for introducing impeachment legislation.

Send the message to your Congress that now is the time to show strength and exercise the checks and balances built into our government.

“The funding bill was a timid attempt by Congress to rein in a reckless president, “United For Peace and Justice Legislative Coordinator Sue Udry commented.

“The president’s veto highlights the necessity for a stronger bill, with a binding deadline. Through this action Bush has again made clear his stubborn determination to continue the war in the face of public opinion. Unless Congress enacts the strong curbs that are necessary, Americans and Iraqis will be held hostage to a failed policy,” said Carolyn Eisenberg, Professor of American Foreign Policy at Hofstra University and co-chair of the United For Peace and Justice legislative working group.

“The president is wrong to veto the Iraq spending bill and reject its needed timeline for the orderly, responsible, and safe withdrawal of our forces from Iraq. He was wrong to lead us into the war, wrong to conduct it so poorly, wrong to refuse to change course. We cannot continue business as usual in Iraq. It is time for America to end its participation in the brutal civil war.” Sen. Edward M. Kennedy said.

Be sure to tell your Congress to follow through and control a President whose views are increasingly divorced from reality in Iraq.
