Today I sat relaxing, watching the Sunday morning news when my tranquil spirit was broken: As it is done every Sunday, ABC reads the names of all the young people who lost their lives in combat; there were twelve names today. No pictures of them were shown; just empty helmets draped over rifle butts. No one speaks of the mothers, or lovers, or teachers they left. I often wonder: Does anyone else cry when they hear the names of the soldiers who died in combat? Does anyone else even listen, or do they look away? Will any of those listed be one of my former students? I have spent my adult life teaching high school. For many years now, I have watched our best and brightest march in ROTC; they are always so proud when they first get their uniforms, and then their rifles. They always ask me to take their picture for they are so proud. Soon they graduate and in a few months, they come kiss me good-bye as they head off to some foreign country. Maybe I get to see one or two of them again when they come home on leave, but all too often, the next time I see them, it is at their funeral. I cannot keep watching precious young people die for the sins of our nation’s fathers. If these foolish and greedy men (and now add the names of a few women) want war so badly, let them fight. Give us our young people. If you must take from them, send them out on peaceful missions to help foster peace and good will in third world countries. Stop killing our babies. As a grandmother and a teacher, let me take the place of those I have spent so much time nurturing and teaching. Do not take the lives of the young. If you must take a life, I promise you, there are grandmothers and grandfathers who will become your fodder. If it is simply blood you want to shed; shed the blood of the old. There are no just wars, just unjust men.
