On one hand it is heartening that The People of the United States and their representatives in government are awakening to the abuses perpetrated in their name. Momentum is building for the impeachment of the members of an apparently criminal executive branch. If enacted in time it may thwart the administration’s movement toward attacking Iran.
And it is also heartening that Congress is trying to implement a redeployment of the troops now in Iraq. The fact that Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul, the only overt peace candidates, are perceived as the extremists within their respective parties is disappointing.
This fact points to underlying issues that must be acknowledged.
So on the other hand these heartening developments weigh against the conditions that permitted our current situation to develop in the first place. It is too easy to merely claim public manipulation through deception. The People of the United States were easy marks for the lies. In many ways they still are. What makes us, as a nation, so willing to pursue massive bloodshed? What is it in our minds that was appealed to that we permitted one questionable election to follow another?
In many ways we are now concerning ourselves with closing the barn doors after the horses have run away. And as long as impeachment and redeployment are sharply polarized partisan issues we will continue to miss the point. Who and what are we that we allow this to happen again (after Vietnam) and again (after Nicaragua)
and again! and again! and again!?
There are movements attempting to address underlying issues. Human rights, animal rights and environmental movements are seen to work with peace movements and each other. Why should this be so? What are the common factors among them? And what are the common factors among those who resist all of these movements?
I have become convinced good answers are available. These may not be the final answers but they are workable and productive. These answers result from years of study and predominantly rely upon history and psychology. They indicate a method for creating nations with generations of compassionate citizens.
This is a method for creating lasting world peace.
First and foremost children and their mothers must have a safe, non-violent and supportive environment. This environment must be secured for all mothers and children, not only in the United States but everywhere. Hand-in-glove with this, child-rearing practices must focus on helping children reach their own goals in life, rather than “socializing” them into fulfilling parental wishes.
Children must experience less psychological manipulation, more unconditional love. Children raised in this way are far more compassionate towards others in society than earlier generations. The history of child-rearing practices indicates this as the way for humanity to evolve beyond its cycles of violence and abuse.
This is the path forward for all of humanity.
A more in-depth examination of the theory behind this must wait for another post. If you cannot wait, look up psychohistory. Read the work of Lloyd deMause. And if you wish to start as soon as possible, start demonstrating some compassion.
