“We’d probably all be a lot happier if we’d just remember how lucky we are to be alive on this beautiful planet.” Willie Nelson
One day I was really depressed beating myself up with all sorts of negative thoughts. I buried myself in Willie Nelson’s book, The Tao of Willie: A Guide to Happiness in Your Heart and read it cover to cover. After reading so many good stories and practical wisdom from Willie’s words I began feeling better. I decided to visit Willie and tell him how much I appreciated what he had to say and ask him a question. Willie was home to welcome us with his quick beautiful smile and friendly handshake.
I told him how much I appreciated his guidance in his book and how it helps me when I’m down. Acknowledging the hardships he worked to overcome I asked Willie how he did it. He told me he read Kahlil Gibran and Edgar Cayce like he says in the book and I just looked at him hoping for more of a clue. Then Willie said, “I quit poisoning myself.” I said, “Like you started loving yourself?” And Willie repeats, “I just quit poisoning myself.” Then I got it.
Marshall Rosenberg, the father of nonviolent communication, teaches us in Part 2 of Nonviolent Communication how to hear the needs in the two parts of ourselves, the evaluator of what we do and the chooser of what we do. This technique will help us quit poisoning ourselves.
