Peace Moms Cindy Sheehan, Tina Richards and Eve Tetaz, a 75-year-old retired schoolteacher, were arrested today while protesting the invasion and occupation of Iraq. This nonviolent resistance inaugurated a “Summer of Action” promised to extend to until Congress’ summer break, June 31.

A total 33 pacifists were arrested out of an estimated 250 peace advocates who marched through Washington, DC to Capitol Hill.

With the increasing public outcry against the policies and actions of the current administration the actions of the Democratic Party are under scrutiny. Any perceived softness of the Democratic leadership, especially House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) could spawn a voters’ revolt.

The Democrats were voted into power in a clear mandate to curb the excesses of the Bush administration. Many now accuse the Democratic Party of seducing and abandoning the peace movement. This could lead to a strengthening of the Green Party and the Libertarian Party.

If the peace movement could unify behind an agreed upon slate of candidates they would be a political force to be reckoned with.
