Democrats and Republicans United

Iraq Benchmarks, supposedly tied to further funding of the occupation, lead with requiring new laws on oil revenue. These laws are the ones where the Iraqis sign away their oil rights. So now we see what is most important to the Democrats.
The Democrats lust after Iraq oil just as the Republicans do. I’ve written about this before, here. It is no wonder that these oil and gas laws due by the end of the month remain mired in debate. But the debate is just for show; actually the majority of Iraqis are unified on this issue.
Iraq is unified in their unwillingness to sign over Iraq’s treasure even at the point of a gun. The debate seems to concern how to divide Iraq’s oil revenue among its Shiite, Kurdish and Sunni regions. The Kurds don’t like the map and the Sunni don’t want to be cut out.
They will debate this until the United States leaves Iraq.
The real issue is about how much foreign investment to allow. The Iraqis want none. And there isn’t really any reason for them to allow it. In Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iran the foreign oil cartels are hired to come in and do the work then leave. They are paid well but the profits stay in the respective countries. Foreign investment in Iraqi oil would change that.
The profits to be made are huge. The estimate of the cost to extract Iraqi oil is in the range of $1.00 to $1.50 a barrel. This includes everything, discovery, extraction and delivery. With the price of oil tripling since the invasion you can see why the oil cartels want to take the profits with them.
Iraqi nationalists are not fighting among themselves.
They resist the privatization of Iraq’s oil. That is why Bush and company ignore them despite the lip service you hear in the United States. And Iraqi nationalists currently pursue their resistance politically. Should the United States force the passing of this law the nationalists will have violent resistance as their only recourse.
This includes the largest Iraqi military force, al-Sadr’s Mahdi Army. The dance we see between the Democratic Congress and the Republican Administration is a show. They are unified as well.
They want the oil profits.
And now the Iraqi nationalists also want the United States out of Iraq. The gig is up. But Congress will not send a clear message as to when the United States will leave. Bush is determined to stay until he gets it. And the Iraqis will do their best to wait them out.
This is why it is most important for The People of the United States to keep the pressure up to stop the madness. Only then is there a chance that the Democrats will perform as promised. More likely is that their true colors will be more apparently revealed.
Then we have a choice.
Will The People of the United States vote all the bums out? Will the Greens or the Libertarians, or both, eclipse the power of both the Republicans and the Democrats? Will a new political party emerge on a peace and justice platform?
This may be the last chance for The Voice of The People to be heard. After all we have lost in the way of civil rights and respect, will we still be fooled one more time? It is time for you to stand up. It could very well be your last opportunity to do so.
