If we allow horses to be slaughtered and shipped to foreign markets, we begin a process of erasing our history and to erase our history is synonymous with erasing our memory. When we no longer have a memory of the horse’s contribution to the making of this country we lose a part of ourselves. Our strength as a nation resides in the individual who remembers their history and horses are integral in the creation of our culture. Horses are still a part of who we are even though they no longer pull our wagons, provide basic transportation or transport our mail.
Once our memory is erased we will be given a new history, which might deny us the high ideal of freedom we cherish and expect today. We are not guaranteed freedom unless we choose to exercise our voice and understand what is at stake. Did you know horses are being slaughtered and sent to foreign markets? Did you know there are two foreign owned slaughter plants in Texas? There was a third plant in Illinois until recently. Your voice counts. Do you want to stop this barbaric practice and reconnect to our history by protecting a National Treasure?
To deny our history and culture strips current and future generations of the pride that created this nation. The horse symbolizes the strength and freedom that we embrace as a nation and as expressed in the documents establishing the United States.
When the U.S. government put Native Americans on the reservations, they took away their horses as a method to subdue and subjugate them. The U.S. government knew that without the power of the horse the Native Americans were thoroughly vanquished and no longer posed a threat.
The differences between the people of the United States and the government of The United States have rarely been more obvious. If we allow horses to be abused and slaughtered for consumption we lose a part of our spirit because we allow a National Treasure to be destroyed. Loss of spirit might not be readily apparent to all people but the resulting effects will manifest as a change in the fabric of our society as a symbol of strength and freedom is destroyed. What new beliefs will replace these?
Horses are highly valued in areas of therapeutic work with children and adults accomplishing healing both physically and mentally where no other modality is successful. Released inmates who have worked with horses are less likely to commit crimes that incarcerated them. Horses benefit our lives and economy in so many ways.
According to the American Horse Council, the horse population in this country has grown to 6.9 million horses and the U.S. equine industry currently contributes $112.1 billion a year to the American economy.
Humans have domesticated the horse and we are responsible for their well-being. If we abuse horses we diminish ourselves at the same time. The people of the United States do not eat horsemeat. It is sold to foreign markets. Horses in this country are for companionship and sports.
