Poodie Locke Remembered

“There are no bad days” was the slogan Poodie Locke, Willie Nelson’s stage manager of 34 years, put on a sign outside his Poodie’s Hilltop beer joint in Spicewood. But Wednesday was a dark one for members of the extended Willie Nelson family as Locke was found dead of an apparent heart attack at his home in Briarcliff, about 30 miles west of Austin. He was 56.
“He wasn’t feeling well and Shaye (Locke’s girlfriend) called for EMS at around two in the afternoon,” said Bryan Dixon, a manager at the Hilltop. “Poodie collapsed just as the ambulance got there, but they couldn’t revive him.” As news spread, Locke’s 133-capacity club quickly filled up with mourners.

“Willie loved Poodie’s exuberance,” said Casey Monahan of the Texas Music Office, who hung out with Locke Saturday at Nelson’s show at Carl’s Corner. “Willie’s whole thing is living in the moment and that was Poodie.”
In Willie’s band of gypsies, Locke was the ringleader who had a hug for everyone no matter how much else was going on. Everybody loved Poodie, the only roadie with his own logo and line of barbecue sauces, but there was work to be done so both of the Nelson crew buses had signs that said “Poodie’s on the other bus.”
“He was the heart and soul of the road crew,” said Joe Nick Patoski, author of the definitive Nelson biography “An Epic Life.” Although the touring life can be stressful, Poodie always had a smile because, after all, he had the best seat in the house.
“I do not recall ever seeing him any way but calm,” said lawyer Bobby Earl Smith, who met Locke as a member of Freda and the Firedogs. “All hell would be falling around him and he just kept keeping on, slow, deliberate, getting the job done.”
Locke was a gentle giant who treated everyone special, which is why it was inevitable that, in 2002, he opened Poodie’s Hilltop Bar & Grill. It would be a place where Willie’s cronies and crew could hang out between tours, but Poodie spent many of his “off” days working on his laptop at the bar, setting up stage specifications for tours. He’d always drop everything, however, when an old friend popped in.
The Hilltop became a place where the famous, such as Willie, Merle Haggard, Garth Hudson of the Band and Big & Rich would sometimes play for hours, unannounced.
As his mother Gloria “Momma” Locke loved to say, Poodie won the Most Beautiful Baby contest in Waco when he was just a few months old. The nickname “Poodie” came from a younger sister who couldn’t pronounce “pretty” in describing her sibling.
A 12-year-old Locke met Nelson, from nearby Abbott, in Waco. Before hooking up with Willie just before “Red Headed Stranger” blew up, Locke was a roadie for B.W. Stevenson.
“Indecision may or may not be our biggest problem,” Locke quoted Willie as summing up the life of being on the road for up to 275 days a year. Although he’s met countless celebrities through the years, Poodie’s only asked for two autographs: John Wayne and Walter Cronkite.
Locke worked a Willie show at Carl’s Corner Saturday and seemed to be in good health, according to Patoski. He’s survived by his girlfriend Shaye, his sister Cindy and his mother.
You were lucky if you knew Poodie Locke, a larger-than-life folk hero who epitomized, behind the scenes, the humor and humility and edication his boss presented onstage. You can be sure there is devastation in Willie World. A member of the immediate family, Willie’s spiritual kid brother, has passed on.
There’s a little less love out on the road. But, as Poodie knew better than anyone, the road still calls.

Thanks for posting this. Unfortunately I’ve never met Poodie and – in this live – I never will. This is a great loss for Poodie’s family as well as for Willie and Family. I’ll light a candle for Poodie and all his loved ones.

I am very saddened to hear about Poodie Locke’s death. Thanks so much for letting me know about this, Liz. My love and condolences go out to all of his family and friends. And from the sound of it, all of Mr. Locke’s friends were just like family and that says a lot about him as a man. Although it will be hard to do, I’m sure the Willie Nelson arm of the family will continue on down the road … because to do otherwise just wouldn’t do! Love and prayers…Suze

Suze, thank you so much for this beautiful comment. I think you’re right. The best way to celebrate Poodie would be to keep on playing that music he loved so much and bringing it to as many people as possible. Take care, my dear friend.

Every man, woman and child should get down on thier hands and knees and thank there God whoever it may be.Every morning, noon, and night for the fact they lived on the same planet at the same time that Poodie Locke did.
Most of them will never know that’s why things are going so good for them. Because Poodie was alive at the same time. You want to know why you feel like shit right now. Very simple. Poodies gone and your still here. So do what Poodie taught ya. Get up in the morning, put your boots on and get out the house. Even though the big guy is gone, remember,”there aint no bad days”

I wrote this song in memory of Poodie:
That Very Sad Sixth Day Of May (At Poodie’s Hilltop Roadhouse)
I’d hitchhiked to Poodie’s to play
For a fun Wednesday night open mic
At Poodie’s Hilltop Roadhouse on the sixth day of May
Was where I’d heard the news that he’d died
That was such a very sad time
With the look in Brooks’ eyes which were glazed
I think that he’d wanted to cry
A quiet moment of remembrance we paid
CHORUS:
On that very sad sixth day of May
A quiet moment of remembrance we paid
At the place where there’s no bad days
On that very sad sixth day of May
Bridge:
At the place where there’s no bad days
Nobody knew exactly what to say
Me, I just hitchhiked away
On that very sad sixth day of May
CHORUS

I met Poodie 25 years ago in Las Vegas. He always gave us Cali Girls the VIP treatment and introduced Kerry Ann and I as Willie and His most dedicated “Groopies”. Whenever they came to California we always knew he had a spot for us on the bus B-4 and after the Show. I met sooo many Celebrities because of Poodie and have some of the Best memories of my life spending time with him. He always made me feel like I was the only girl in the room no matter how many beautiful people were around. He was a constant Gentleman and made sure everyone had a good time. I Love You Poodie and will never forget all of the special times we spent together. I just really can’t believe you are gone but best believe that you will never be forgotten. My sympathy and condolences go out to Momma Locke, Willie, Paul, Bud, Jodie and all the Crew. Thanx again for soo many GOOD Days!!!!

I was fortunate enough to have been poodies room mate from early 83 to mid 86 little fuzzy on the months but if you knew poodie you know why. what a caracter what a human being. he and budrock were very patiente with me as they taught me how to play golf. poodie said jackson if you can’t play golf. were off to a bad start. the time I spent at poodies were some of the best times of my life. memories I’ll always cherish. laughing with you or growling at cha. he was all over the map. probably the most genurous man I ever met. lot of stories can’t be told. but the most important was he made you feel like you were his best friend. even though everyone thought he was their best friend. I loved him, I miss him. and as he use to say a fartin horse never tires.

Poodie always remembered my name. He would be surrounded by people and still find time to “visit”. That was how cool Poodie was! Sorry he had to go so early. I’ll miss him . . .
Kind regards, Dickie Lee Erwin
